Founded in 1968 by Erich Zakowski, the German Zakspeed racing team was the official Ford team in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) series late in 1970s, This championship was a predecessor of the current DTM.
Zakspeed racing team would quickly achieve success in the DRM race series and in the European Touring Car Championship. Indeed, Zakspeed Escorts dominated DRM racing from 1973�1976.
Built for the purpose of Group 2 DRM racing, the MKII Escort is truly legendary. Hans Heyer drove the car to victory in both 1975 and 1976, and then the following year 1977 it was converted for use in Group 5.
